A little about the importance of Mission Statements
Posted on March 03, 2012 by @mqtodd
How can a business especially a new or developing business steer their best course?
How do stakeholders, employees, managers or anyone involved stay on anywhere near the same page? Avoid personality conflicts, variance in ideologies, make everyone feel part of the team?
The best Mission Statements are relatively concise. They are also best written by everyone involved in the business. The statement then becomes something even the toilet cleaner feels he or she has contributed to. Everyone is this emotionally enrolled and feels part of the mission.
When someone needs to consider an action or needs motivation they can easily refer back to the statement. It can be displayed around the premises of the business or even read out prior to meetings for reinforcement.
It can be a fluid, developing thing open to input or addition from anyone at anytime.
So what should be in the thing?
Guidance, inspiration, direction, motivation….
I have cobbled together a rough attempt that I would like to have as a Mission Statement for any business I am involved in.
1.We are a 100% a business. We are not in any way a charity,a cause or a social group.
2.We exist to make money. As much as possible as fast as possible.
3.We do no bad and where and when possible we do good. At all times we abide by our Corporate Social Responsibility Guidelines.
4.We are the best in the world at what we do. We are innovative and reliable. We are constantly seeking to improve our performance and value.
5.We offer incredible value to customers, clients, joint venture partners and staff.
6.We are respectful, tolerant and supporting of our fellow members.Without condition
When possible we listen twice as much as we speak. We defend those who are absent.
7.We show up, step up, give without hesitation and do not shirk responsibility.
8.We are leaders
9.The interests of the business always come before the interests of an individual member.
10.We promote and protect the name of the business at all times.
11.We have worked hard to create our brand and attraction.Lets not blow that in any way.If we have one iota of doubt about an action we refer back to this mission statement and/or ask for a second opinion from a fellow group member before taking that action.
12.We harbour no regrets or grudges. Any past experience is something to be cherished as a learning experience.
13.We are ruthlessly honest and transparent in all our dealings with each other and with all entitities outside our business.
14.We have fun and attack all tasks with a positive attitude.
15.We have total clarity and focus and are unstoppable.
16. WE PROMOTE AND SUPPORT OTHER PEOPLE AND BUSINESSES IN OUR NICHE. WE DO NOT SEE COMPETITORS BECAUSE WE ARE THE BEST AT WHAT WE DO.
17. In short we see abundance.
Which path will your business head down? Its all about beginning with the end in mind.
